Caption:
Archaic architectural fragments reused in the foundations of the Pinakothiki (the northwest wing of the Classical Propylaia). Many of the fragments come from the cornice or geison blocks of small Doric buildings (perhaps "treasuries") built in the 6th century BC. Some of these blocks come from a building with an apsidal (rounded) end. The fact that fragments of this apsidal building were found in the foundations of the Pinakothiki has led some scholars to suggest that this Archaic building may actually have stood nearby.
