Arch of Hadrian

Caption:
Arch of Hadrian. Eastern side. Detail of attic or upper storey. There are 3 bays or "windows", each framed by Corinthian pilasters. In addition the central bay has two Corinthian columns. These columns project a slight distance forward, and support a triangular pediment. This gives the central bay the look of a small temple or shrine. In antiquity, this central bay would have been closed with slab (the upper portion is still preserved). The other bays would have been open, as they are now. View from the east. Photo taken January 30, 2000.
