City Eleusinion

Caption:
The Panathenaic Way and Post-Herulian Wall, looking towards the Propylon (gateway) into the City Eleusinion. View from the northwest. (Compare Agora 31, plate 2a-b for views before excavation). When the Post-Herulian Wall was constructed after 267 A.D., this Propylon was blocked up and the wall ran right over it. Since the Eleusinian Mysteries continued to be observed until 396 A.D. the entrance to the sanctuary in the late Roman period must have been further east, in a section not yet excavated. August 8, 2003.
