City Eleusinion

Propylon (gateway) to the City Eleusinion. View from the west, looking directly east. (Compare Agora 31, plate 12b). The section of the Panathenaic Way in front of the Eleusinion seems to have been paved in the 1st century A.D. When the Post-Herulian Wall was constructed after 267 A.D., this Propylon was blocked up and the wall ran right over it. Since the Eleusinian Mysteries continued to be observed until 396 A.D. the entrance to the sanctuary in the late Roman period must have been further east, in a section not yet excavated.
