City Eleusinion

Detail of the Rocky Outcrop. We know from several other Athenian sanctuaries that boulders and natural outcrops of bedrock can have special religious significance. For example, the Crossroads Shrine at the northern side of the Agora encloses a outcropping of bedrock. At Eleusis, ancient sources tells us that there was a "Mirthless Rock" (Agelastos Petra) upon which Demeter sat. It has been suggested that this Rocky Outcrop is one these "sacred rocks" and may have played some significant role in the cult here, as the "Mirthless Rock" did at the Eleusis. (For the argument and references, see Agora 31, pp. 20-21.). View from the southwest. August 8, 2003.
