City Eleusinion

The City Eleusinion. View from the southwest. Near the center and right edge of the photo, just before the modern wall and green fence, are the remains of ancient walls and other monuments, including part of a long, rectangular foundation that clearly extended farther to the east (that is, under the modern street and kapheneion). In fact, it is likely that only the western end of the City Eleusinion has been excavated so far, and that the majority of the sanctuary, including the most important sections, still are waiting to be found under the modern buildings to the east. This photo is 3 of 3 in a panorama moving from west to east (left to right). August 8, 2003.
