The Kerameikos. Southeast section of the Dipylon Gate. The fountainhouse is visible at the far right. Just to the left of center in the photo youi can see the partially preserved remains of a round altar. An inscription on the altar tells us that it was dedicated to Zeus Herkeios, Hermes, and Akamas (the Eponymous Hero of an Athenian tribe). The altar was found nearby, but the excavators think that it originally belonged here on the eastern side of the Dipylon Gate. View from the southeast.
