Pnyx

Caption:
The Pnyx. Detail of the rock-cut scarp on the eastern side of the Bema. The niches belong to a sanctuary of Zeus Hypsistos that was located here in the Roman period. The small niches were for plaques dedicated to the Zeus Hypsistos by ancient worshippers. Since Zeus Hypsistos was a healing god, many of the plaques had depictions of human body parts (breasts, legs, eyes). Photo taken March 26, 2000.
