Roman Agora

Caption:
The Roman Agora (Market of Caesar and Augustus). Gate of Athena Archegetis (Athena the Leader), the western entrance. Late 1st century B.C. This was the main entrance to the Roman Agora, and stood at the end of a road leading from the OLD Greek Agora. An inscription on the architrave tells us that the construction of the gate was paid for by funds from Julius Caesar and Augustus. But the style of the building deliberately recalls the "Classical" Doric order of the 5th century B.C. used in the Parthenon and the Propylaia.
