Why was this project developed?

The Online Database of New Testament Manuscripts was written to facilitate the writing of the dissertation of Michael Jones, a graduate student at the University of Cambridge. All of the material in this database has been available in print form for some time; but there was never an easy way to search through the manuscripts using multiple parameters.

How do I query the database?

There are two options for searching the database: searching passages or searching manuscripts. Pressing 'Search Passages' with the desired book (e.g. 'Luke'), chapter, or verse (or a combination of all of these) typed into the appropriate field will return all manuscripts that contain the particular passage. Likewise, pressing 'Search Manuscripts' will return only the manuscripts with the parameters you enter. For example, to find all papyrus located in Berlin, select 'papyrus' from the drop-down box and type 'berlin' in the location field. Four papyri (p25, p63, p79, p8) will be returned.

Field Descriptions

Gregory-Aland Number - Enter the Gregory-Aland number associated with the manuscript to return the information stored in the database.

Type - Currently, only majuscule and papyri are entered into the database. In the future, more manuscript types may be added.

Earliest Date, Latest Date - Enter dates using three or four digits to find a manuscript from a particular century. For example, to find manuscripts from only the 4th century, enter 300 in the Earliest Date field and 399 in the Latest Date field.

Location - Enter a city, country, archeological site, or other identifying location associated with a particular manuscript. Unfortunately at this time, data for each manuscript has not been separated into find spot or current location.

Book - Enter a biblical book, such as 'Luke' or '2 Timothy'

Chapter - Currently, searches are limited to only one chapter.

Beginning Verse, Ending Verse - If you are interested in only one verse, enter the same number for both the Beginning Verse and Ending Verse fields.

Where was the data obtained?

Vincent Broman compiled the bibliography from the now defunct ENTMP project and posted the data here.
