Traditional typographic representation

EpiDoc Encoding

  1. <gap id="gap28" reason="lost" extent="3" unit="character" precision="circa" /> <certainty target="gap28" locus="extent" degree="low" />
  2. <gap id="gap29" reason="lost" extent="10" unit="character" precision="circa" /> <certainty target="gap29" locus="extent" degree="low" />

EpiDoc appearance with standard XSLT

  1. [ · c.3 · ]
  2. [ · c.10 · ]

Notes

Both examples communicate the certain loss of characters, but a significant difficulty in determining how many characters are lost, either because the width of surviving individual characters elsewhere in the inscription makes estimates difficult, or because the line ends are entirely lost.
