The Latin term "i longa" is used by modern epigraphers to denote elongated (or tall) "i", a character originally intended to mark a double "i" or a long vowel quantity (e.g. "DIs" for "Diis") but employed indiscriminately for long or short "i" throughout the late Republic and imperial period.

Of the typographic exempla consulted for the EpiDoc guidelines, only one work addresses this case (<xref href="bibliography.xml#dohnicht">Dohnicht</xref>, p.3, who recommends: ì, easily confounded with characters bearing apices). For the purpose of EpiDoc markup, we advise primary encoding indicating the appearance of the character (see Tall Characters). Secondary markup may then be applied to indicate editorial observations concerning the significance of the character's appearance (see, e.g., Vowel Quantity).
