      <head>Notes</head>
<p>The Latin term "i longa" is used by modern epigraphers to denote elongated (or tall) "i", a character originally intended to mark a double "i" or a long vowel quantity (e.g. "DIs" for "Diis") but employed indiscriminately for long or short "i" throughout the late Republic and imperial period.</p>
<p>Of the typographic exempla consulted for the EpiDoc guidelines, only one work addresses this case (<bibl><title level="a" type="abbreviated"><xref href="bibliography.xml#dohnicht">Dohnicht</xref></title>, <abbr expan="page">p.</abbr><biblScope type="pages">3</biblScope></bibl>, who recommends: ì, easily confounded with characters bearing apices). For the purpose of EpiDoc markup, we advise primary encoding indicating the <hi rend="strong">appearance</hi> of the character (see <xref href="tallcharacters.xml">Tall Characters</xref>). Secondary markup may then be applied to indicate editorial observations concerning the significance of the character's appearance (see, e.g., <xref href="vowelquantity.xml">Vowel Quantity</xref>).</p>
