All of the principle features of the previous edition of Homer and the Papyri continue to be available in this second edition. The user can, for example, obtain a list of all Iliad papyri by simply choosing the title ("Iliad") in the search form, and leaving the other options blank. Such a list may be further restricted by specifying a book number or a range of books. Each field of the search form further specifies the search, and a list is then dynamically generated to meet the needs of each user.
The six fields let you narrow your searches. The first field is for the title. You can search the Iliad, Odyssey, or both at the same time. In this sample query, the user searched both of the books. In the second field, the user searched through books '2' and '3'. Notice the use of the 'greater than' and 'less than' operators. If you want to search only the first and last two books of the Iliad, you can enter '<=2 or >= 23'. For the line field, a different notation is shown. The example for book will work for line as well; this is just an alternative method.
Since the title and book fields are described in the previous sample query, only the varian and description field will be discussed. The variant field is the heart of the database. This contains all the variants in the books. In this example, the user wanted to find all the variants in books 1-9 where a line is omitted. He further narrowed down his search by limiting the results to variants found only at Oxyrhynchus.
In the final sample query, the user wanted to find all the places in the Odyssey where Odysseus is spelled with this variation. The variation must be provided in beta code. Again, he further refined his results by only searching manuscript p22.
