         <item>An <tag>abbr</tag> element within the <tag>expan</tag> containing the abbreviated form of the word is available but optional. It may be useful when the abbreviation contains additional markers not in the expanded form (cf. <ref target="EncEx-3" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">Augg</ref> and <ref target="EncEx-4" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">pr.</ref> above), but might require additional linking in cases where the abbreviation must be expanded by interpolation (<ref target="EncEx-2" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">cf. co(n)s(ul)</ref>)</item>
         <item>When the abbreviated form contains markers not in the expanded form, such as <ref target="EncEx-3" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">additional letters</ref> or <ref target="EncEx-4" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">punctuation</ref>, best practice is to put these in <tag>orig</tag> elements, which the standard stylesheets will omit when rendering the expanded form.</item>
         <item>Abbreviated phrases (<abbr expan="for example = exempli gratia">e.g.</abbr>, <foreign lang="lat">D(is) M(anibus)</foreign>) should properly be marked-up as a group, as illustrated in <ref target="EncEx-5" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">the example above</ref>, but marking them as single words is not incorrect (see <ref target="EncEx-6" evaluate="all" targOrder="Y">the second example</ref>).</item>
