EpiDoc Encoding

  1. <gap id="gap28" reason="lost" extent="3" unit="character" /> <certainty target="gap28" locus="extent" degree="low" />
  2. <gap id="gap29" reason="lost" extent="10" unit="character" /> <certainty target="gap29" locus="extent" degree="low" />

EpiDoc appearance with standard XSLT

  2. [ · c.10 · ]

Both examples communicate the certain loss of characters, but a significant difficulty in determining how many characters are lost because the width of surviving individual characters elsewhere in the inscription makes estimates difficult.
