Barley-meal moistened with oil and honey, which they used to offer to the gods.[1] They are called ψαιστά from wiping [περίψησις ] the mill clean.
Or pastry. Or a kind of flat cake.[2]
Also in the Epigrams: "I send you these cakes and gifts from the sacrificial offering."[3] And elsewhere in the Epigrams: "and a poor handful of a few barley-cakes."[4]
Also ψαιστῶν ['of barley-cakes'], which were barley-meal ground down in a mill.[5]
And elsewhere: "rich barley-cakes and precious olive-oil" (πιήεντα means oily).[6]
