Headword: Ἀγαθός
Adler number: alpha,120
Translated headword: good
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
From ἄγημι, ἄγαμαι, [come] ἀγαστός [and] ἀγαθός .
Greek Original:
Ἀγαθός: παρὰ τὸ ἄγημι, ἄγαμαι, ἀγαστὸς καὶ ἀγαθός.
Notes:
For the headword see also alpha 121 (likewise masculine), alpha 118, alpha 119 (neuter).
The present entry seems to assert an etymological connection between ἀγαθός ('good') and these other words. The others are apparently interrelated: ἄγημι seems to be an active version of the attested ἄγαμαι ('wonder at, admire'), and ἀγαστός means 'admired'. All are connected with the prefix ἀγα- . The derivation of ἀγαθός from the same prefix is not accepted nowadays, but scholars do not agree on any other derivation either.
