Arrian [writes]: "he was striking up the ravaging of the rest of the territory, thinking the Athenians would give in."[1]
For preludes [anabolai] are both the strikings-up and the starts [proper].[2] Hence the [use of] 'was starting' [ἤρχετο ] and 'was starting off' [ἀπήρχετο ].
Also [sc. attested is] ἀνεβάλλοντο , [meaning] they were fashioning.
Greek Original:Ἀνεβάλλετο: προοιμιάζετο, ἀνεκρούετο, ἐνήρχετο, καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ ὑπερετίθετο. Ἀρριανός: ἀνεβάλλετο τὴν τῆς ἄλλης χώρας δῄωσιν, οἰόμενος ἐνδώσειν Ἀθηναίους. Ἀναβολὰς γὰρ καὶ τὰς ἀνακρούσεις καὶ τὰς ἀρχάς. ὅθεν καὶ τὸ ἤρχετο καὶ ἀπήρχετο. καὶ Ἀνεβάλλοντο, ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐσχηματίζοντο.
