An Alexandrian, writer of epic poems; spent some time on Rhodes; son of Silleus;[1] a student of Kallimachos;[2] contemporary with Eratosthenes,[3] Euphorion,[4] and Timarchos, in the reign of Ptolemy known as The Benefactor [Euergetes],[5] and Eratosthenes' successor in the Directorship [prostasia] of the Library in Alexandria.[6]

Ἀπολλώνιος, Ἀλεξανδρεὺς, ἐπῶν ποιητὴς, διατρίψας ἐν Ῥόδῳ, υἱὸς Σιλλέως, μαθητὴς Καλλιμάχου, σύγχρονος Ἐρατοσθένους καὶ Εὐφορίωνος καὶ Τιμάρχου, ἐπὶ Πτολεμαίου τοῦ Εὐεργέτου ἐπικληθέντος, καὶ διάδοχος Ἐρατοσθένους γενόμενος ἐν τῇ προστασίᾳ τῆς ἐν Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ βιβλιοθήκης.

[6] Here the Suda is probably mistaken: other testimonia indicate that Apollonios was Eratosthenes' predecessor as Director of the Library, rather than his successor. The Suda or its source seems to have confused Apollonios the poet with a later character, "Apollonios the Compiler", named in P.Oxy. 1241, col. ii. See further R.
