Also [sc. attested is the aorist infinitive] αὐτομαχῆσαι : when someone lays claim to a house or a plot of land, and the seller is of sufficient means to appear [sc. to be able] to pay the penalty and to settle the lawsuit against the claimant, but the possessor of the house or plot wishes there to be a private trial against the disputant: this is called αὐτομαχῆσαι .[2]
Greek Original:Αὐτομαχεῖν: τὸ δι' ἑαυτοῦ δικάζεσθαι, ἀλλὰ μὴ δι' ἑτέρου. καὶ Αὐτομαχῆσαι: ὅταν ἀντιποιῆταί τις οἰκίας ἢ χωρίου, καὶ εἴη ὁ πεπρακὼς μὲν ἀξιόχρεως ὥστε δοκεῖν ἀποτῖσαι τὴν ζημίαν καὶ συνίστασθαι τὴν δίκην πρὸς τὸν ἀντιποιούμενον, βούλοιτο δὲ ὁ διακατέχων τὴν οἰκίαν ἢ τὸ χωρίον ἴδιον αὑτῷ γενέσθαι ἀγῶνα πρὸς τὸν ἀμφισβητοῦντα, τοῦτο αὐτομαχῆσαι καλεῖται.

[2] Despite what this supplementary paragraph of the entry implies, it is most unlikely that the aorist infinitive of
αὐτομαχέω had a more specialized meaning than the present infinitive; and the rigmarole in this second paragraph anyway shows up poorly against the equivalent material (presented exempli gratia) in Harpokration.
