Aristophanes [writes]: "he would not even have accepted Achaia".[2] They used to call her this from the beat made by the cymbals and drums during the examination of the girl; or from her distress [
ἄχος ] about her daughter; or from the sound [
ἦχος ] which they used to produce near the bridge as she departed for
Athens. The sense, however, [is that] he would not even have endured Achaia herself.
Greek Original:Ἀχαία: ἡ Δημήτηρ. Ἀριστοφάνης: οὐδ' ἂν τὴν Ἀχαίαν κατεδέξατο. οὕτω δὲ αὐτὴν ἐκάλουν ἀπὸ τοῦ κτύπου τῶν κυμβάλων καὶ τυμπάνων τοῦ γενομένου κατὰ τὴν ζήτησιν τῆς κόρης: ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ περὶ τὴν θυγατέρα ἄχους: ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἤχου, ὃν παρεῖχον ἐν τοῖς περὶ τὴν γέφυραν εἰς Ἀθήνας ἀπιοῦσαν. ὁ δὲ νοῦς, οὐκ ἠνέσχετο ἂν οὐδὲ τὴν Ἀχαίαν αὐτήν.
