This adjective, here neuter singular, is otherwise unattested and its etymology is unclear. It could be related to
ἄζηλος "unenviable, dreary" (
alpha 590), but the suffix seems arbitrary. (It should not be an Ionic form of the adjective
ἀζαλέος [
alpha 579,
alpha 580], which has a short alpha.)
