Headword: Ἀζηλόεν
Adler number: alpha,589
Translated headword: gloomy
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. Something] black/dark.
Greek Original:
Ἀζηλόεν: τὸ μέλαν.
Notes:
same entry in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian lexicon.
This adjective, here neuter singular, is otherwise unattested and its etymology is unclear. It could be related to ἄζηλος "unenviable, dreary" (alpha 590), but the suffix seems arbitrary. (It should not be an Ionic form of the adjective ἀζαλέος [alpha 579, alpha 580], which has a short alpha.)
