It is a kind of private lawsuit which could be brought as the result of [suffering] blows. Its punishment was not defined in the laws; rather, the plaintiff specified in writing what punishment he thought the crime deserved, and the jurors adjudicated [sc. between that and the proposal of the defendant].

Αἰκίας: εἶδος δίκης ἐστὶν ἰδιωτικῆς ἐπὶ πληγαῖς λαγχανομένης, ἧς τὸ τίμημα ἐν τοῖς νόμοις οὐκ ἔστιν ὡρισμένον, ἀλλ' ὁ μὲν κατήγορος τίμημα ἐπιγράφεται ὁπόσου δοκεῖ ἄξιον εἶναι τὸ ἀδίκημα, οἱ δὲ δικασταὶ ἐπικρίνουσιν.
