And again: "following step-by-step and in a leisurely fashion."[3]
Aristophanes [writes]: "[the] Megarians, when they were starving step-by-step, appealed to [the] Spartans".[4] Meaning they were starving, they were being destroyed by famine. Βάδην means that the famine was increasing little by little and incrementally, growing in size.

Βάδην: περιπάτῳ ἐρχόμενος. τοὺς μὲν προαπέστειλεν, αὐτὸς δὲ ἐν πλινθίῳ τὴν στρατιὰν ἐπαγόμενος ἐχώρει βάδην. καὶ αὖθις: βάδην καὶ σχολαίως ἀκολουθῶν. Ἀριστοφάνης: Μεγαρεῖς, ὅτ' ἐπείνων βάδην, Λακεδαιμονίων ἐδέοντο. ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐλίμωττον, ὑπὸ λιμοῦ διεφθείροντο. βάδην ἀντὶ τοῦ κατὰ βραχὺ αὐξανομένου τοῦ λιμοῦ καὶ ἐπίδοσιν λαμβάνοντος, προϊόντος ἐπὶ τὸ μεῖζον.
