Those assigned to jury-service [sc. in classical Athens] used to take from the public attendants a token and a staff, and this is how they acted as jurors. The court had the same colour as the staff. The token, however, they would give back after the verdict and collect the three-obol; this was the pay for jurors.

Βακτηρία καὶ σύμβολον: οἱ λαχόντες δικάζειν ἐλάμβανον παρὰ τῶν δημοσίων ὑπηρετῶν σύμβολον καὶ βακτηρίαν, καὶ οὕτως ἐδίκαζον. τὴν χρόαν ὁμοίαν εἶχε τῇ βακτηρίᾳ τὸ δικαστήριον. τὸ μέντοι σύμβολον [μετὰ] τὴν κρίσιν ἀποδιδοῦντες ἐκομίζοντο τριώβολον: ὅπερ καὶ δικαστικὸν γέγονεν.
