Bacchylides, a contemporary and rival of Pindar, is reported to have written lyric hymns as well as odes addressed to human beings, collected by the Alexandrians in a total of nine books. His works were lost until 1896 when parts of two papyrus rolls of his epinicians and dithyrambs were discovered.
[1] For other versions of this name see under mu 834 and mu 835.
[2] His nephew, in fact. For Simonides see sigma 439, sigma 440, sigma 441.
