A key, [the word deriving] from hooking [agruein] the bolt [balanos]. A bolt is the iron for the bar, which we call a magganon ["door-pin"]. Also balanoi ["bolt"], the pins of the fastening. Also bebalanôtai ["it has been bolted"], meaning it has been fastened.

Βαλανάγρα: ἡ κλείς, παρὰ τὸ ἀγρεύειν τὴν βάλανον. βάλανος δέ ἐστι τὸ εἰς τὸν μοχλὸν σιδήριον, ὃ καλοῦμεν μάγγανον. καὶ βάλανοι, τὰ μάγγανα τῆς κλειδώσεως. καὶ βεβαλάνωται, ἀντὶ τοῦ κεκλείδωται.
