Headword: Δωδεκαδώρῳ
Adler number: delta,1439
Translated headword: twelve hand's-breadths in length
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
Being of twelve palms.[1] For the palm [is] a hand's-breadth.[2]
In the Epigrams: "having drawn back the [bullock's] neck they sacrificed it to Cyllenius[3] and with a long nail they fixed its horns, twelve hand's-breadths in length, to a plane-tree."[4]
Greek Original:
Δωδεκαδώρῳ: δώδεκα παλαιστῶν ὄντι. δῶρον γὰρ ἡ παλαιστή. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: Κυλληνίων αὐερύσαντες ἔρρεξαν καὶ οἱ δωδεκάδωρα κέρα ἄλλῳ μακροτένοντι ποτὶ πλατάνιστον ἐπάξαι.
Notes:
[1] The headword is dative singular of the rare adjective δωδεκάδωρος . Such a dative is otherwise attested only in the scholia to Hesiod, Works and Days 426, where δεκαδώρῳ occurs and the ancient commentator protested that the proper proportions of waggon-manufacture exposed this as an error for δωδεκαδώρῳ .
[2] cf. delta 1472, epsilon 406.
[3] Pan (the son of Hermes - to whom the epithet is more usually applied: cf. kappa 2660)
[4] Greek Anthology 6.96.3-5, the MSS of which provide the following readings, translated here: Κυλληνίῳ , ἁλλω (marked with a query; Salmas' emendation ἅλῳ is translated), ἔπαξαν .
