Headword: Δακνόμενος
Adler number: delta,22
Translated headword: bitten
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
With accusative.[1] Inconvenienced, eaten up by the expenses of horse-rearing. For it appears to be expensive to rear horses; which is also connected to the Laconian curse. For indeed the Lakedaimonians did classify this as a curse.[2] It is this: 'may house and rampart[3] get you, and may your horse and your wife take a lover', all these things being expensive and damaging.[4] He said the 'bitten' as a result of the man having been shut up within the bedclothes.[5]
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Clouds 12, where the headword occurs.
[1] Obscure, unless one is 'bitten' in respect of X in the accusative; or perhaps δακνόμενος is a middle participle, 'biting', referring to the act of cursing? (Note, however, that this grammatical gloss may simply be a mistaken repetition of the one in delta 21.)
[2] For this idiom see LSJ s.v. meros, IV.3.
[3] Cf. alpha 1532, end, where the present article is cited.
[4] Cf. iota 577, omicron-iota 66.
[5] A reference forward to line 37 of the play: "a demarch [mayor] out of the bedclothes is biting me".
