It was a gold currency, which Darius first devised.
[Note] that when Xerxes sent an envoy to him and offered him three thousand Darics, [Aristides] said that he had no use for Persian wealth, living the life he did. He happened to be offering carelessly-baked bread.[1]
The army of this Darius was counted, and apart from the navy 700,000 were found together with the cavalry. Against the Scythians 600 ships were assembled.[2]

Δαρεικούς: νόμισμά τι ἦν χρυσοῦν, ὅπερ Δαρεῖος πρῶτος ἐπενόησεν. ὅτι Ξέρξης ὡς αὐτὸν πρεσβευσαμένου Ἀριστείδου καὶ τρισχιλίους δαρεικοὺς αὐτῷ διδόντος, οὐδὲν ἐπιστρέφεσθαι ἔφη τοῦ Περσικοῦ πλούτου τοιαύτῃ χρώμενος διαίτῃ. ἔτυχε δὲ οὐκ ἐπιμελῆ τὸν ἄρτον προσφερόμενος. τούτου τοῦ Δαρείου ἠριθμήθη ὁ στρατός, καὶ εὑρέθησαν μυριάδες χωρὶς τοῦ ναυτικοῦ σὺν ἱππεῦσιν ο#. νέες δὲ ἑξακόσιαι συνελέγησαν ἐπὶ Σκύθας.
