Ἐγκράτεια σωφροσύνης διαφέρει: ἡ μὲν γὰρ σωφροσύνη ἠρεμαίας ἔχει τὰς ἐπιθυμίας, ἡ δὲ ἐγκράτεια σφοδράς. ἐγκρατὴς λέγεται οὐ κατὰ ἀπάθειαν, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸ πάσχειν μέν, μὴ ἄγεσθαι δὲ ὑπὸ τῶν παθῶν. καὶ Ἐγκρατής, ὁ ἐπικρατέστερος.
