When individuals[1] had been condemned to have their properties confiscated, if [others] asserted that they were creditors of the [properties] being confiscated, [the laws of Athens] used to instruct these men to make a list of when and how much money they had lent; this was called making a claim on confiscated property. If however the lenders furnished pledges guaranteeing that they had not told lies about the debt, this used to be called a pledge of a deposit.

Ἐνεπισκήψασθαι καὶ Ἐγγύην καταβαλεῖν: καταδικασθέντων τινῶν δημεύεσθαι τὰς οὐσίας, εἰ λέγοιέν τινες, ὡς εἴησαν δανεισταὶ τῶν δημευομένων, ἀπογράφεσθαι τούτους ἐκέλευον, πότε καὶ πόσον ἐδάνεισαν ἀργύριον: ὅπερ ἐλέγετο ἐπισκήψασθαι. εἰ μέντοι γε παρίστων ἐγγυητὰς τοῦ μὴ ἂν διαψεύσασθαι περὶ τοῦ δανείσματος οἱ δανείσαντες, τοῦτο ἐγγύην καταβολῆς ἔλεγον.
