Headword: Ἐγκύμονος
Adler number: epsilon,136
Translated headword: pregnant
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
Being with child. Also [the phrase] pregnant woman.
Greek Original:
Ἐγκύμονος: ἐγκύου οὔσης. καὶ Ἔγκυος γυνή.
Note:
The headword ἐγκύμονος is a genitive singular feminine form -- evidently quoted from somewhere -- of the adjective ἐγκύμων , meaning "pregnant"; in the gloss ἐγκύου (genitive of the quoted nominative ἔγκυος ) is from the same root and also means "pregnant" or "with child". Compare pi 1405 for a quotation from Josephus, Jewish War 3.245-7 (web address 1) which is possibly the source of the form ἐγκύμονος in the present entry. A search of the TLG E CD-ROM returns 59 instances of the form including the two in the Suda and the one in Josephus.
