Headword: Ἐντευξόμενος
Adler number: epsilon,1469
Translated headword: about to meet, run into, participate in dialectic
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
about to discuss, engage in dialectic discussion.
Greek Original:
Ἐντευξόμενος: διαλεχθησόμενος.
Notes:
The masculine nominative singular of the future participle (middle, as always) of ἐντυγχάνω . This verb has many meanings, but a specific one in philosophy, ‘meet others or another in a session (arranged or not) of dialectic discussion in the baths’ (see ἔντευξις , epsilon 1468). It may also mean ‘meet (by rendezvous or not) with an official to make a petition.’ See web address 1.
The future passive participle in the definition belongs to the verb διαλέγομαι , regarded as a deponent verb with alternative middle or passive forms. It apparently invokes the process of being questioned, examined and refuted (ἔλεγξις ) that characterizes dialectic.
This verb represents well the continuing presence of the image of “aiming and hitting with a little bit of luck” in τυγχάνω and its compounds (alpha 3591, sigma 1639 and cross-references). When I make a rendezvous with, or otherwise try to meet, someone, it is not clear that he will be there; when I attend a discussion, a committee meeting or seminar, it is never certain exactly who will be there; when I run into someone by chance in the street or the baths and stay to talk, it may be by chance but with a sense of welcome opportunity. It is as if I had hit a target. See A.W. Gomme’s useful note on the meaning of ἔτυχε in his commentary on Thucydides, vol. 3, pp. 488-89.
