Headword: Ἐγχρίπτεται
Adler number: epsilon,186
Translated headword: comes close
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[He/she/it] approaches.
"Onto the [battering-]rams, whenever they attacked, they were throwing heavy weights, so that the strength [sc. of the rams] would perish as they were coming close."[1]
Greek Original:
Ἐγχρίπτεται: ἐγγίζει. τοῖς δὲ κριοῖς, ὁπότ' ἐπιφέροιντο, ἐπέβαλλον βάρη, ὡς ἐγχριπτομένοις ὀλλύοιτο ἡ βία.
Notes:
The headword is present middle-passive, third person singular, of ἐγχρίπτω . Other lexica present the headword in slightly different forms (e.g. ἐχρίμπτεται ,) but always with this same gloss; it is evidently quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given, which uses a present middle-passive participle).
cf. generally epsilon 187, epsilon 188.
[1] Quotation unidentifiable.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; historiography; history; military affairs; science and technology
