The name [is] Greek but the substance Persian. He was initially a foretaster who ate before the king to ensure his safety. But subsequently the custom was to call 'taster' the manager of the entire staff and administration.

Ἐδέατρος: τὸ μὲν ὄνομα Ἑλληνικόν, ἡ δὲ χρεία Περσική. ἦν δὲ προγεύστης τὸ πρῶτον καὶ προήσθιε τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς ἀσφάλειαν. ὕστερον δὲ ἐνομίσθη ἐδέατρον καλεῖν τὸν ἐπιστάτην τῆς ὅλης διακονίας καὶ παρασκευῆς.
