Translation: [A proverb] applied to those experiencing a turn for the worse. From a certain Mandrobolos, who discovered the quarry in
Samos:[1] at first he dedicated a golden ram,[2] then a silver one, then a smaller bronze one, and then no longer [made any dedications], according to Ephoros.[3]
Greek Original:Ἐπὶ τὰ Μανδροβόλου: ἐπὶ τῶν εἰς τὰ χείρονα τρεπομένων. ἀπὸ Μανδροβόλου τινὸς τὸ ἐν Σάμῳ γεωφάνιον εὑρόντος καὶ πρῶτον μὲν κριὸν χρυσοῦν ἀναθέντος, ἔπειτα ἀργυροῦν, ἔπειτα χαλκοῦν ἐλάττονα, εἶτα οὐκέτι, ὡς Ἔφορος.
