Headword: Ἐρρέτω
Adler number: epsilon,2939
Translated headword: let it go [to hell]
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A curse on it, let it go away.
"Let the war go to hell!" That is, goodbye to it, i.e. we are paying no attention to the war. Aristophanes [says this].
Greek Original:
Ἐρρέτω: οἰμωζέτω, φευγέτω. ὁ πόλεμος ἐρρέτω. τουτέστι χαιρέτω. ὅ ἐστιν οὐδεμίαν φροντίδα τοῦ πολέμου ποιούμεθα. Ἀριστοφάνης.
Note:
Aristophanes, Knights 673 with scholion. However, the verb should actually be ἑρπέτω (see web address 1), 'let the war take its course' -- a phrase which recurs in Lysistrata 129. Apparently the slogan of those Athenians who -- whether in 424 or 411 -- wanted no truck with peace negotiations with Sparta.
