The postponement of war for a short time, and tranquility. From the holding [ἔχειν ] of the hands [χείρας ], being a sort of 'handholding' [ἐχεχειρία ].
Josephus [writes]: "as if fused to their weapons they never take an armistice from their training."[1]

Ἐκεχειρία: ἄνεσις, ἀργία, συνθήκη, ἔνδοσις, ἀνοχὴ πολέμου. ἡ πρὸς ὀλίγον χρόνον τοῦ πολέμου ἀναβολὴ καὶ ἡσυχία. παρὰ τὸ ἔχειν τὰς χεῖρας, ἐχεχειρία τις οὖσα. Ἰώσηπος: ὥσπερ τοῖς ὅπλοις συμπεφυκότες οὐδέποτε τῆς ἀσκήσεως λαμβάνουσιν ἐκεχειρίαν.
