The meaning suggested in the gloss is not attested in the surviving occurrences of the headword (predominantly in Theophrastos in reference to plants). Almost certainly we are dealing with a mistake on the part of the Suda or its immediate source(s). The verb
ἐκπλήγνυσθαι , a variant of the verb used in the gloss (
ἐκπλήττεσθαι ) occurs in
Thucydides 4.125.1 (Web address 1). Probably on the basis of
scholia to
Thucydides, earlier lexicography (
Moeris,
Hesychius epsilon1629) presents glosses that are very similar to this one apart from the presence of the letter lambda in the headword. Adler cites a scholium to
Thucydides 4.125.1 as an original source, but no such scholium is printed in Hude's edition of the
scholia to
Thucydides. Pseudo-
Zonaras reproduces this erroneous entry in his lexicon.
