Headword: Ἐκπήγνυσθαι
Adler number: epsilon,569
Translated headword: be frozen stiff
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
To be astounded.
Greek Original:
Ἐκπήγνυσθαι: τὸ ἐκπλήττεσθαι.
Note:
The meaning suggested in the gloss is not attested in the surviving occurrences of the headword (predominantly in Theophrastos in reference to plants). Almost certainly we are dealing with a mistake on the part of the Suda or its immediate source(s). The verb ἐκπλήγνυσθαι , a variant of the verb used in the gloss (ἐκπλήττεσθαι ) occurs in Thucydides 4.125.1 (Web address 1). Probably on the basis of scholia to Thucydides, earlier lexicography (Moeris, Hesychius epsilon1629) presents glosses that are very similar to this one apart from the presence of the letter lambda in the headword. Adler cites a scholium to Thucydides 4.125.1 as an original source, but no such scholium is printed in Hude's edition of the scholia to Thucydides. Pseudo-Zonaras reproduces this erroneous entry in his lexicon.
