Thucydides unanimously say that [this
ἐάν spelling occurs] when
ἢ ["or"] precedes it, but that when [the words] are not in this order he uses the contraction [
ἤν ]. In the second [sc. book there is an example of the first of these phenomena]: "or if the enemy [does not] attack with a fleet".[1] "Or, if forced to, [the demos becomes] hostile to the rebels."[2]
Ἐάν: ὁλοκλήρως οἱ περὶ Θουκυδίδην τότε λέγουσιν ὅτε προτέτακται ὁ η, ὅταν δὲ μὴ οὕτως ἔχῃ τάξεως, συνῃρημένως λέγει. ἐν δευτέρᾳ: ἢ ἐὰν οἱ πολέμιοι νηί̈τῃ στρατῷ ἐπιπλέωσιν. ἢ ἐὰν βιασθῇ ὑπάρχει τοῖς ἀποστήσασι πολεμίοις.
