Headword: Ἕλεα
Adler number: epsilon,769
Translated headword: Helos
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
[The name for] the cities founded on marshes.[1]
Also Ἑλεάτης , one who comes from the city [of this kind].[2]
Greek Original:
Ἕλεα: τὰς πόλεις τὰς ἱδρυμένας ἐφ' ἕλεσι. καὶ Ἑλεάτης, ὁ ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως.
Notes:
[1] The neuter headword is actually in the plural, ἕΛεα , but any given city would of course be singular; Stephanus of Byzantium s.v. gives (with this etymology) the instance of Helos in Laconia.
[2] ἑΛεάτης , with the rough breathing, is attested only here. This adjunct to the entry looks like a repetition, with altered aspirate, of what epsilon 768 has said about Elea.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography
