A fruit.
Adler refers to the unedited
Lexicon Ambrosianum 551 as a comparandum.
Apparently the headword is a variant of what is more commonly encountered as
ἕλινος , with the rough breathing, and which means properly 'vine' or 'tendril' (cognate with the verb
ἐλίσσω :
epsilon 871,
epsilon 872), but can stand
pars pro toto for the grape plant. It appears with the smooth breathing, expressly in this sense, in the text of
Eustathius,
Commentary on Diogenes the Periegete 1153.11, 43, and with a smooth breathing and oxytone accent in
Etymologicum Magnum 330.40.
