Σοφοκλῆς: ὁρῶ γὰρ ἡμᾶς οὐδὲν ὄντας ἄλλο πλὴν εἴδωλα, ὅσοιπερ ζῶμεν, ἢ κούφην σκιάν. τοιαῦτα τοίνυν ἐσορῶν ὑπέρκοπον μηδέν ποτ' εἴπῃς αὐτὸς εἰς θεοὺς ἔπος, μηδ' ὄγκον αἴρῃ μηδέν', εἴ τινος πλέον ἢ χειρὶ βρίθεις ἢ μακροῦ πλούτου βάθει. ὡς ἡμέρα κλίνει τε κἀνάγει πάλιν ἅπαντα τἀνθρώπεια. τοὺς δὲ σώφρονας θεοὶ φιλοῦσι καὶ στυγοῦσι τοὺς κακούς.
