Some explained the Magnesian stone as Heraclean because
Heracles was from
Magnesia. But others [said] that the [stone] which draws iron is Heraclean, but the Magnesian [stone] is like silver. Thus
Euripides in
Oineus [writes]: "searching out the minds of men, as the Magnesian stone draws the opinion and changes it back."[2] He is not saying that iron is drawn by the Magnesian stone, but the opinion of those who observe, which is led astray as by silver.

Ἡρακλείαν λίθον τινὲς τὴν Μαγνησίαν ἀπέδοσαν, διὰ τὸ τὴν Ἡράκλειαν τῆς Μαγνησίας εἶναι. οἱ δέ, ὅτι ἡ μὲν ἐπισπωμένη τὸν σίδηρον Ἡρακλεῶτις, ἡ δὲ Μαγνῆτις ἀργύρῳ ὁμοία ἐστίν: ὡς Εὐριπίδης ἐν Οἰνεῖ: τὰς βροτῶν γνώμας σκοπῶν, ὥστε Μαγνῆτις λίθος τὴν δόξαν ἕλκει καὶ μεθίστησιν πάλιν. οὐ λέγει νῦν ὑπὸ τῆς Μαγνήτιδος λίθου τὸν σίδηρον, ἀλλὰ τὴν τῶν θεωμένων δόκησιν ἕλκεσθαι, πλανωμένων ὡς ἐπὶ ἀργύρῳ. ὅτι ἄποικοι Ἡρακλειῶται.
