According to Naber, it could have an Homeric origin, because ἤγειρα occurs on two occasions in the Iliad (5.208, 17.222) and once in the Odyssey (2.41) -- and in scholion D to Iliad 5.208 (web address 1) we have: ἤγειρα: παρώρμησα, προέτρεψα “I awakened: I urged on, I impelled”.
