Headword: Γαλαθηνός
Adler number: gamma,15
Translated headword: suckling
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
One at the teat,[1] that is one at the breast.[2]
Greek Original:
Γαλαθηνός: ὁ ὑποτίτθιος, ἤγουν ὁ ὑπομάζιος.
Notes:
= the first gloss in a longer entry in Etymologicum Magnum 219.56. The headword is attested from Homer onwards, and usually applied to animals, especially piglets, often in the context of sacrifice: see LSJ s.v. (Web address 1).
[1] Hesychius gamma74 has an entry equivalent to this, except that both lemma and gloss are in the accusative case, rather than the nominative as in the present case. This may derive from commentary to Septuagint, 1 Kings (=1 Samuel RSV, etc.) 7:9. Cf. Anecdota Graeca (Bekker) 229.22.
[2] For this gloss Adler cites Lexicon Ambrosianum 5.
