Headword: Γλίσχρος
Adler number: gamma,289
Translated headword: Wheedler
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
A lowlife, a flatterer. "Become a wheedler, asking, begging. Euripides....". [In] liparôn the lambda-iota [is] long.[1]
Also glischrôn ["longing for"], desiring; from glichesthai ["to long for"].[2]
And glischrôs ["submissively"], in a slippery manner.
Notes:
Cf. generally gamma 288, gamma 290.
[1] Aristophanes, Acharnians 451-2 (web address 1 below), followed by comment from the scholia there. Cf. lambda 579. The verb λιπαρέω could be transitive as well as intransitive, and both of these entries appear to treat it as the former; however, as the translation shows, "Euripides" (vocative anyway!) is part of the following sentence.
[2] From the scholia to Aristophanes, Peace 193, where the word occurs.
