And [there is] a proverb: "to sacrifice to Histia." The proverb is said about those who do not easily share with anyone. For it was a custom among the ancients, when they sacrified to Histia, to give no one a share of the sacrifice.[3]

Ἱστίον: ἄρμενον. πλήρεσιν ἱστίοις ἐς τὴν αὐτοῦ σοφίαν καθῆκεν. ἀντὶ τοῦ παντὶ σθένει, πάσῃ δυνάμει, ὅλῃ ψυχῇ. καὶ παροιμία: Θύειν Ἱστίᾳ. εἴρηται ἡ παροιμία κατὰ τῶν μηδενὶ ῥᾳδίως μεταδιδόντων. δι' ἔθους γὰρ ἦν τοῖς παλαιοῖς, ὁπότε ἔθυον Ἱστίᾳ, μηδενὶ μεταδιδόναι τῆς θυσίας.
