To berate.
The headword is quoted from
Homer,
Iliad 23.337. Verb form (from
κεντέω :
kappa 1336) frequently glossed, including
Hesychius,
Lexicon Artis Grammaticae,
Etymologicum Magnum, and the scholiast. The Suda's gloss is unique, however, and comes from confusion over the D
scholia on the Homeric passage, "to spur on, shouting" (
κένσαι ὁμοκλήσας ): "strike (
πλῆξον ) with a spur, and berating (
ἐπιπλήξας ) with voice". The Suda has used the gloss of "shouting" instead of the gloss of "spur on".
