Headword: Κένσαι
Adler number: kappa,1329
Translated headword: to spur on
Vetting Status: low
Translation:
To berate.
Greek Original:
Κένσαι: ἐπιπλῆξαι.
Note:
The headword is quoted from Homer, Iliad 23.337. Verb form (from κεντέω : kappa 1336) frequently glossed, including Hesychius, Lexicon Artis Grammaticae, Etymologicum Magnum, and the scholiast. The Suda's gloss is unique, however, and comes from confusion over the D scholia on the Homeric passage, "to spur on, shouting" (κένσαι ὁμοκλήσας ): "strike (πλῆξον ) with a spur, and berating (ἐπιπλήξας ) with voice". The Suda has used the gloss of "shouting" instead of the gloss of "spur on".
